Outdoor, Ecological, and Experiential Education Courses (OE3)

Welcome

May 2008

Hi and welcome,

I know that some of you OE3 candidates are now beginning to plan your courses for the fall and choosing sections to enroll in. With that in mind, I have put together a few notes based on past years’ courses. These are meant to provide examples only; it is still very early in the planning stages for next year. Things could change a bit between now and September.

From my perspective, the OE3 program provides opportunities to explore the practical side of experiential teaching, but also the theoretical side. It is very important to be “thinking” teachers as taking critical perspectives and enacting resistance and change within educational systems can be challenging and elusive.

Personally, I have taught environmental ethics for many years which means that I have an interest in environmental philosophy and philosophy of science. These themes will work their way into the courses and give my section a particular flavour. In the notes that follow, you will find a little information on each of the courses (as I pursue them), a few tentative notes about field trips and trip dates (subject to change), and a small sample of the kinds of readings we have looked at in the past.

It will be a very exciting year and I look forward to meeting you in the fall.

Best wishes,
Bob Jickling
